Try it once, use it forever!
Yes, you read that correctly. Today, we are not talking about paper.
For once, we will not be talking about reels, board, grammages, corrugators, cores, tubes or boxes. We will not be talking about delivery times, price lists, orders or stock availability.
For more than sixty years, our work has been to produce recycled paper and to collaborate every day with paper converters, corrugated-board manufacturers, tube producers and packaging companies.
Today, however, we would like to devote a few minutes to the people who purchase that paper, convert it, handle it and turn it into a finished product. Because behind every reel there is a machine. But above all, there is a person.
It is 8:31 in the morning.
You have already read your first emails and replied to the most urgent messages.
You have only just switched on your computer, but the phone rings before you have even managed to finish your first — or perhaps your second — coffee.
New emails keep appearing on your screen, while your mobile phone vibrates constantly.
A salesperson walks into your office asking for confirmation. The production department reports an urgent issue. A supplier is waiting for an answer, the haulier wants to know whether the truck will leave today or tomorrow and, in the meantime, someone knocks on the door with another problem to solve.
The morning is already slipping away.
You pause for a moment, look at the clock and realise that you have not yet started even one of the three most important tasks you had planned for today.
You have replied to dozens of emails, made phone calls, dealt with an emergency and solved problems that could not wait. All necessary, of course. But none of it was what you had intended to do when the day began.
Then lunchtime arrives almost without you noticing.
The afternoon starts again at the same pace. One meeting gives way to another, one urgent request replaces the one you have just dealt with and, every time you think you are finally free, something new appears that immediately demands your attention.
When you eventually get into your car to drive home, someone asks you:
“How was your day?”
The answer comes almost automatically.
“It was incredibly busy.”
But stop for a moment. If you had to describe one specific episode from your day, something you genuinely remember, how long would it take you to find it in your memory?
Perhaps longer than you imagine. Because while your body was in the office, on the production floor or in front of the machine, your mind was already somewhere else.
On the next problem. On the phone call you still had to make. On tomorrow’s delivery. On the customer waiting for an answer.
And so the day passed. You got through it.
But did you really live it?
This feeling has a name. Very often, we work on autopilot. Our body is present, but our mind keeps racing backwards and forwards.
While listening to a customer, you are already preparing your reply. While checking an order, you are thinking about the next meeting. While having lunch, you are still working in your head.
It happens so often that we barely notice it anymore.
According to Osho, author of the book Awareness, most people live in exactly this way. Not because they are unable to pay attention, but because the mind is constantly pulled towards the past or the future, forgetting the only moment in which we can truly act: the present.
We are used to thinking that tiredness depends only on the number of hours spent at work. In reality, a significant part of our fatigue comes from the constant noise inside our heads.
Every task is interrupted by a phone call, a notification, an email or an urgent request. By the time we finally resolve one problem, our mind is already occupied with the next one.
It is like having dozens of windows permanently open on your computer. Each one requires attention. Each one consumes energy. At the end of the day, we are not simply tired. We are mentally drained.
In his book, Osho presents an idea that is as simple as it is powerful. When we feel anxiety, anger or concern, our natural reaction is to look for another distraction.
We check our phones, open another email and move from one task to another, believing that we are being more productive. In reality, we are simply avoiding observing what is happening inside us.

The solution, according to him, is to stop for a few moments and observe. Observe what we are doing. Observe what we are thinking. Observe the emotions we are feeling, without immediately trying to change them.
It may seem like a concept far removed from the industrial world. In reality, the exact opposite is true.
A truly attentive operator notices an anomaly before it becomes a paper break. A purchasing manager genuinely listens to what a supplier is saying and picks up details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
A production manager makes better decisions because they do not react impulsively, but assess the situation clearly. An entrepreneur stops chasing events, even if only for a few minutes, and starts guiding their day again.
Being present does not mean slowing down. It means working with your full attention, rather than constantly scattering it.
Tomorrow morning, try doing something differently. Before opening your first email, before making your first phone call or attending your first meeting, stop for thirty seconds.
Look at the environment around you. Listen to the sounds of the production floor or the office. Drink your coffee without looking at your phone. It may seem like a waste of time.
Perhaps, instead, it is the best way to regain control of your day.
Every day, here at our paper mill in Trevi, we produce hundreds of tonnes of recycled paper and board.
We know how important quality, service and on-time deliveries are. But we also know that no reel of paper would have any value without the people who transform it every day into a box, a tube, a display or a packaging solution.
That is why today we decided not to talk about paper. We preferred to talk about you. Because machines make noise. Paper keeps moving. Orders arrive and leave.
But it is always people, with their attention and their presence, who truly make the difference.
Tomorrow, your diary may be just as full as it is today. But if, even for just one minute, you manage to be fully present in what you are doing, that day will not simply be another working day.
It will be a day truly lived.
